Community Involvement

Community

The staff of Maritime Physiotherapy recognizes the privilege it is to live in  Canada and a community like Halifax Regional Municipality. With this privilege comes a desire to give back to the community which is why we are involved with the following:

Movember Fundraiser

The month of November is Prostate Cancer Awareness and Fundraising month, also known as Movember. Rob MacDonald has joined the campaign which requires participants to grow a moustache for the month to help raise awareness and donations for prostate cancer. Rob is a member of a team, Oxford@Eight AthleticsClub, which has set a goal of raising $10,000 by the end of the month. As of Nov. 29th we have raised over $9,500! If you are interested in making a donation go to http://www.movember.com/ca/donate/your-details/member_id/2141468/.

Running Fund Raiser

Rob MacDonald's running group, the Oxford @ Eight Athletic Club, recently organized a fund raiser following the Bluenose Marathon in May, 2011. Monies raised through a silent auction and 50/50 draw ( over $4,000.00 ) were given to the Run Nova Scotia Youth Running Series and the Run and Read Program which is designed to promote fitness and education with kids from inner city schools.  Rob and his running group also volunteered at a recent Youth Running Series event in Point Pleasant Park, acting as course marshalls, registration officials, and finish line officials.

Canadian Sprint Canoe and Kayak Championships

In the summer of 2008 the Canadian Sprint Canoe and Kayak Championships were held in Dartmouth on Lake Banook .  Maritime Physiotherapy staff were proud to provide physiotherapy services for the athletes throughout this event. It was an honor to work with these national and Olympic level competitors.

Canada Games Speed Skating

Brent Thompson  volunteered for the Canada Games Speed Skating organizing committee and also volunteered as an on ice speed skating official during the Canada Games this past February, 2011.  Brent has also just recently been named the head coach of the Dartmouth Speed Skating Club.

Worldvision Canada

We, at Maritime Physiotherapy, have been sponsoring a young boy in Mali, West Africa for the past 2 years through the organization Worldvision Canada. This sponsorship not only aids the sponsor child but also his family and community. We have found it to be very fulfilling as we have had regular letter communication with him and have been able to follow his progress.
