Working at a desk all day? Your posture NEEDS massage therapy!

Most people spend 6-10 hours a day at the computer. This can lead to postural dysfunctions including forward head posture and turned in shoulders.

Forward head posture is caused by tension in the neck and upper back and a weakening of postural neck muscles.

Turned in shoulders are caused by tight chest muscles and weakened, lengthened upper back muscles. Prolonged tension in neck and shoulders can also lead to tension headaches.

Massage therapy can help with both of these dysfunctions by:

  • decreasing tension

  • relaxing tight muscles

  • increasing mobility

  • supporting postural correction.

Along with massage therapy desk workers should be taking stretching breaks/getting up every hour or so, staying well hydrated and having an ergonomic assessment (if available) to ensure a proper set up.

If an ergonomic assessment is not available some simple tips to consider include making sure your monitor is at eye level so you’re not looking down all day, and your feet on the floor (or a step stool or box if you don’t reach the floor).

I would recommend weekly or biweekly treatment if your postural pain and tension is causing you frequent headaches and issues in your daily life. Once the pain is addressed and decreased a 6-8 week maintenance schedule should be set up.
